What is Breakaway Training?

Breakaway Training is an invaluable course designed to help individuals safely and effectively disengage from physical confrontations. The training includes a set of techniques and strategies covering a range of skills, effective communication, de-escalation, and physical techniques.  The goal of Breakaway Training is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills they need to prevent harm to themselves and others, while minimising the risk of injury.

Who would need Breakaway Training?

Whether you work in Healthcare, Education, or Security, it is important to have the skills and knowledge to protect yourself and others from harm. For front line staff working in a care environment, this is a vital course as individuals can sometimes be physically aggressive due to behavioural issues. Those who work with clients where the risk assessment dictates that there could be a risk of violence or aggression, de-escalation and Breakaway Training is a must. This course demonstrates how to cope with physically aggressive behaviour in relation to your duty of care, when de-escalation techniques have failed, and physical assault may be imminent.

When can I put Breakaway Training into practice?

Breakaway Training equips you with the skills and confidence to handle challenging scenarios, ensuring the safety of both you and those in your care. If you where to find yourself in a conflicting situation, and you have used your primary and secondary behavior strategies, and still find yourself faced with the imminent threat of violence or a violent attack, then breakaway techniques would come into practice.  We currently deliver training to individuals who work within the following services –

  • Childrens services
  • Adult services
  • Learning Disabilities including Autism and ADHD
  • Mental Health services including secure units.
  • Care services to include Dementia, and those with Acquired Brain Injuries.

Are all Breakaway Training courses the same, or are there different techniques?

No, not all Breakaway Training is the same, our course has been designed to meet the needs of each of our clients.  Safe Hands Training Services will conduct a training needs analysis and our lead trainer will tailor each course to meet YOUR needs!  The principles of all our training is underpinned by, dignity to the client, least restrictive practice, NO pain compliance or manipulation of joints.

The content of our Breakaway Training course is 100% bespoke and tailored to your needs and requirements.

What is Trauma informed Breakaway Training?

The foundation of our Breakaway Training course is the knowledge that every behaviour is fuelled by an emotion! Many people who we are supporting will have experienced trauma as a child or an adult. Our course is a strengths-based approach, we seek to understand and respond to the impact of trauma on people’s lives, communication is key, and we endeavour to make this our first line of defence, Breakaway Training is only used as last resort to keep yourself and the individual involved safe from harm.

What Techniques do we teach?

After speaking with our clients, our lead trainer will look at what needs to be covered and dependent on the training needs analysis he will cover the following breakaway techniques –

Disengagement from –

  • Hair grabs
  • Punches
  • Kicks
  • Biting
  • Bear hugs
  • Clothing grabs
  • Strangles
  • Head locks
  • Wrist grabs

Remember, Breakaway Training techniques should only be used as a last resort and in situations where personal safety is at risk! For this reason our Breakaway Training is inclusive of a theory section where we discuss effective communication and de-escalation, and then the practical session where we cover physical techniques to include breakaway.

Breakaway Training sounds aggressive, is it?

No not at all, remember, Breakaway Training is only to be used as a last resort, the manoeuvres are carefully designed to ensure the safety of both the staff and the individuals involved.  Breakaway techniques are essential skills for staff to safely disengage from potentially violent situations without causing harm, the moves are pain free, easy to learn and more importantly emphasising they are only used when needed!  Hence the importance of effective conflict management and de-escalation training included in this course.
